The Bowral Blacks Rugby Club hosted the fifth annual Southern Highlands Rugby 7’s tournament on October 1, 2016 at Eridge Park, Bowral.
The Southern Highlands 7s is now one of the largest domestic rugby 7s tournaments in Australia. This year 72 teams from Sydney, the ACT and rural and regional NSW descended on the Highlands, including NSW Waratahs (Development teams), ACT Kookaburras (ACT Development teams), Sydney University, Warringah, Hunter, Southern Districts, Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool, Riverina, Campbelltown, Subbies, Illawarra, Oatley, Shoalhaven, Chevalier College, Oxley College, University of Wollongong, Lindfield and many others.
They were competing for silverware and more than $8000 in prize money in a range of age groups including, Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Men’s Colts (U20), Boys U18, Girls U18, Boys U16, Girls U16, Boys U14, Girls U14.
The Best & Fairest Colts (U20) player was again presented with the Thomas Kelly Cup to honour Thomas’ memory.
The Southern Highlands 7s is one of the few tournaments in Australia catering for youth teams, both boys and girls. Bowral Blacks continue to invest in our youth which we know is important for the long-term development of sport in the region.
The Southern Highlands 7’s Rugby tournament first started in 2012 and is sanctioned and supported by NSWRU & the ARU.
