Colts Match Report 10th May 2014 – Brendan “Zip” Fannin
The colts played last year’s undefeated premiers Shamrocks, and when the referee blew full time, it was the Bowral Colts coming out on top.
We again started slowly, and were guilty of ball-watching, being passive and letting Shamrocks dictate terms.
We were coming second in the core skill department:-
• Ball security
• Body height
Some of the early option taking also transferred pressure back onto us – Running the ball from our try line, only to lose the ball, handing Shamrocks possession 25 metres out from our line.
Shamrocks were creating multiple phases and finally scored after 12 minutes.
From the deep kick off, we finally had field position and took the lead at the 15 minute mark with a converted try.
From the restart, we worked the ball down field again, and the tide was turning. We dominated possession and field position, and we ran in 2 more tries. We were guilty of falling asleep right on the halftime bell when Shamrocks scored a converted try.
Half Time Bowral 19 – Shamrocks 12
The half time team talk identified areas of improvement, and it certainly worked, with Bowral running another 4 tries in the second half.
It was another patch of going to sleep towards the end, which allowed Shamrocks to score 2 tries, proving that you can’t afford to switch of in this competition, the opposition teams have the potential to turn it on very quickly when you give them the opportunity.
The final score was Bowral 48 – Shamrocks 27
It was a good result but not necessarily a good win, as Shamrocks had a couple of players out with u18 Country Championships, and a couple of injuries , so they were struggling with playing personnel.
Our next match against the Shamrocks will surely be a stiffer contest.
