Country Referee Breaks New Ground

The 2015 NSW Country Rugby Union Championships will see for the first time a female referee as one of the match officials. Kath Little from Walcha (Central North RRA) is an inclusion in the 9 person group of referees who will take charge of games at the Country Championships at Bowral on May 2-3.

She has previously been a member of the CRURA panels and after a break has come back to the fold to push her skills and test herself against the best referees in NSW Country. In recent years Kath has been involved in both the Central Coast and Darwin 7’s carnivals, the National Women’s carnivals and the Country Schools carnival.

Kath’s selection for this carnival helps to reinforce that there is a pathway available for female referees in the representative fixtures in Australia during the season, which is becoming a year round season as 7’s rugby keeps gaining popularity  throughout the sporting landscape.

With April being Referee’s Month in NSW, Kath and the other referees at this carnival will be looking to increase the profile of referees throughout the various zone Associations in an endeavour to raise the number of referee participants all  levels of Community Rugby.
