To Blacks parents, players and supporters
The club would like to keep you informed of what we are doing to ensure the longevity and development of our players, specifically with regards to our U17’s team.
The U17’s are an important age group for our future strength in the senior grades, and many of our U17 players have been long term Juniors players, some from as far back as the U8’s.
The challenge this team has encountered this season has been a lack of competitive rugby within the Illawarra competition. With 21 members, our boys are the only team in the district to have the numbers for a full XV’s side. Many other clubs have declined in numbers, to the point where some have needed to merge with other clubs to make up a team.
Following multiple game forfeits and a concerted effort in conjunction with other Illawarra clubs, Bowral Blacks have decided to take proactive steps for our own players. Specifically we have sourced additional games with Sydney Junior Rugby Union teams in the U16/U17 age group. The U17s will therefore now play a series of games against both Illawarra and non-Illawarra teams for the remainder of the season.
The U17’s are not leaving the Illawarra competition, nor are they joining the Sydney competition – this is a strategic plan to build a series of non-competition fixtures to ensure the players continue to play rugby. Bowral Blacks Rugby feels this will give the U17 players an opportunity to grow both as individuals and as a team against challenging opposition, to ensure they are playing competitive rugby every week, and remain a strong, cohesive squad.
On June 21 the Blacks U17’s played Hunters Hill-Mosman in the first game of this initiative, and we look forward to a busy remainder of the season both against Illawarra sides and in Sydney.
We look forward to bringing you the latest news from this team in the weeks to come, as they head into a new and exciting chapter in their rugby journey.
