Bowral Rugby Club in the Illawarra District Rugby Union will host the 2015 NRMA NSW Country Championships.
Eridge Park home of the renowned Bowral Blacks will be the venue for the NRMA NSW Country Championship Weekend which will be staged on 2 & 3 May 2015.
Country Executive Officer Terry Woodward in making the announcement said “Bowral Rugby Club was a long term and well established club in the Illawarra District Rugby Union, which was steeped in Country Rugby tradition”.
He went on to say “the Bowral Rugby Club had a proven track record of hosting large events such as the Southern Highland Sevens which in the space of three years had developed into one of the largest sevens tournaments in the state”.
Bowral Rugby Club President Mark Fruend said “the club was excited and honoured to be awarded the event, which would tie in with the scheduled April opening of Stages 1 and 2 of the club’s redevelopment plan”.
Nine Country Zones will contest the championships and will play matches in Seniors and Colts over the two days to determine the winner of the Caldwell Cup and Richardson Shield (Seniors), together with the Bill Rowlands Colts Cup and the NRMA Colts Shield.
Southern Inland Rugby Union had also been extended an invitation to participate in the Tier 2 Richardson Shield, which would add to the revamped championship format.
Five hundred plus players from around the state will participate at the Championship Weekend, which will also serve as the final selection process for the GrainCorp NSW Country Cockatoos and NRMA NSW Country Cockatoo Colts Representative Squads.
Country Rugby President Barry Ruddy said “the Bowral Rugby Club would be the first club to host the NRMA Country Championships in the new time slot of the first weekend in May”.
He went on to say “the allocation of the championships to zones in advance had proven to be a success, as it provided zones and clubs with an extended timeframe to plan the hosting of the event.
