NSWRU: 16 NSW Players Named In Wallaroos Squad

Sixteen players from NSW have been named in the Buildcorp Wallaroos 35-player extended training squad. The squad will head into their first training camp on the Gold Coast in August ahead of the team’s three match tour to New Zealand.

Of the 16 NSW players, 14 were members of the 2016 Buildcorp National Women’s Championship winning team, Sydney including the Championship’s “Player Of The Tournament” Victoria Latu, who has been selected to join the Buildcorp Wallaroos squad for the first time in her playing career.

Alana Patison and Sarah Riordan are the two sole representatives from NSW Country to be selected after impressing with some outstanding overall personal efforts throughout the Championships.

The Buildcorp Wallaroos squad is a balance of experience and rising talent. Of 14 players in the extended squad with World Cup experience, five are from NSW with Katrina Barker (Sydney), Chloe Butler (Sydney), Ashleigh Hewson (Sydney), Cobie-Jane Morgan (Sydney) and Shontelle Stowers (Sydney) who all have represented Australia in the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup campaign.

However Buildcorp Wallaroos Head Coach Paul Verrell said that it was not an easy task to choose who made the final cut for this squad.

“The high standard of play at this year’s National Championships made for some very tough decisions on the selection front and reflects the growing depth we have within this squad,” he said.

With the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup looming, Verrell said he expects some intense rivalry amongst the players during the training camp as they compete for selection.

The 2016 Buildcorp Wallaroos squad will head into camp at Bond University, Gold Coast from Wednesday 24th to Sunday 28th August to begin their preparations. The squad will be narrowed down from 35 to 26 players before the team head to New Zealand in mid October.

The test series against New Zealand’s Black Ferns will include an historic match ahead of the Wallabies Bledisloe Cup clash against the All Blacks at Eden Park on the 22nd October.
