The Bowral Blacks have turned a new page in 2015 with a significantly improved performance against the intimidating Avondale Wombats. For the first 25 minutes of the match, Bowral completely dominated the large Avondale side. The new structure of the Blacks worked well and they were rewarded with a penalty conversion to Cameron Arlington. In the first stanza there were two opportunities to score tries where the final pass went astray, so Bowral should have been leading by at least 15 points after the first 25 minutes if these opportunities hadn’t gone begging. This would have been a fair reflection of the run of play.
In the latter part of the first half, Avondale rallied and scored 3 tries against the tun of play. The half time score was 17 to 3, but Bowral was well and truly in the game and felt confident that they could execute their opportunities in the second half. The focus was on finishing off the opportunities created and making sure the simple skills were done properly.
Unfortunately, the second half did not go to plan with Bowral players getting 2 yellow cards and this disrupted the team’s ability to put pressure on the opposition. The pressure from Avondale eventually paid off and this lead to a brace on unanswered tries for Avondale with them running out eventual winners 58 to 3.
Coach Paul Frean was pleased with the improved performance over the past few years where Bowral were previously trounced by over 100 points at the corresponding fixture the previous year.”The strucutres worked well and the players showed commitment and courage. We also had 3 guys playing out of position which is admirable to see their commitment to their mates. We have a very strong commitment to each other at Bowral and the culture is strong. This is the basis for building winning teams in the future.”
Player points went to: Tim Lewis (3), David Cosgrove (2) and Steve Strode (1). Referee points: 2 went to Cameron Madden.
